How to Get Back Into Routine After Summer

September has arrived, but getting back into routine after summer doesn’t mean we’ve fully arrived yet. While life asks us to move forward, part of us may still be catching up.

Summer Is Over. But Have You Arrived Yet?

Have you just come back from a summer vacation?

September has this strange psychological quality. Summer vacation ends, routines return, children go back to school, work speeds up again, and suddenly there is a sense that we should be getting serious about life.

There are four months left in the year. That let’s start closing the year strong vibe is coming in. Somewhere in all of this, September quietly becomes another January.

Except we don’t always feel ready for it, at least not right away.

I am no exception. I came home from summer feeling as though I had one foot back in my everyday life and another still somewhere else. Physically, I was home. But internally, I wasn’t quite there yet.

Part of me was still processing a summer that had felt full (and a blessing) in almost every possible way. I wrote about some of that unsettled feeling in Coming Home After Summer, but there was still a lot to unpack, and not just the suitcases. Emotionally, there was a lot to unpack too. There had been movement, family activities, travels, disrupted routines, and more happening around me than I had really had time to absorb.

And then came the goodbyes, especially saying goodbye to family I only get to see once a year. Every year, there is a kind of grief that comes with leaving. I grieve the fact that I chose to build my life abroad, and with that choice comes the reality that I don’t get to build all those everyday stories with the people I love.

I love the life I have built. But life is full of choices, isn’t it? And sometimes loving the life you chose doesn’t mean you don’t feel the weight of what that choice asks you to leave behind.

That sadness doesn’t simply end because your flight takes off and eventually lands back in Spain.

You can know the goodbye is coming. You can understand why you live where you live and why they live where they live. You can even feel deeply grateful for the time you had together.

And still, leaving is leaving.

The Space Between August and September

One of the things I enjoy doing in this in-between space is unpacking my suitcase little by little.

Our suitcases are filled with memories of what happened over the summer. Summer always seems to carry us forward, and while we’re in it, we rarely have a moment to sit with everything and appreciate that little thing we bought, the shell we picked up, or the memory attached to something we brought home. Life just moves so quickly during vacation, doesn’t it?

And while this unpacking is happening, our normal life is simultaneously starting again. Watering the plants. Grocery shopping. Dusting the house. Most likely, work is happening too.

When we allow both to unfold at their own pace, we also give our internal world time to catch up. We don’t have to suppress what we’re feeling to move forward, nor do we have to stop everything around us. We can continue with everyday life while still absorbing the experience that has just happened.

Some people can transition in and out of different rhythms quickly. For others, it takes a little longer. Neither needs to mean that something is wrong. It may mean that there is still something being processed—emotionally, mentally, even physically.

In my opinion, the most important question we can ask ourselves in this in-between space is:

How do I feel?

Or perhaps, more specifically:

What state am I actually in?

Life is happening, and it keeps moving. But we don’t have to expect ourselves to switch immediately and be highly productive right away.

Life is a marathon, not a 100-meter Olympic sprint.

Returning Through Ordinary Things

The way back into everyday life doesn’t have to be dramatic. Often, it happens through returning to the ordinary routines that make life feel familiar again. Going back to your morning walk or exercise, cooking your usual meals, picking up the book you left on your bedside table, journaling again, returning to your favorite café, or getting back to a regular sleep schedule. After a summer of movement and disrupted routines, there can be something grounding about doing the same familiar things again.

Routine can sound boring when we’re dreaming about escaping it, but after being away from it for long enough, it can feel remarkably reassuring. Regular routines around sleep, movement, meals, and activities we enjoy can also support our mental health and help us manage stress.

This isn’t about turning September into another self-improvement project or immediately creating the perfect morning routine. The key is to find your rhythm again, little by little, through the things that already make you feel grounded in your everyday life. At some point, without much ceremony, you may notice that you’re home again.

And Then Everyday Life Comes Back Too

There is an irony in finding your rhythm again. As ordinary life starts to feel normal, ordinary life’s stress comes back with it.

The inbox grows, work gathers momentum, the calendar fills, and responsibilities start asking for your attention again. September seems particularly good at adding another layer of pressure. Summer is over, the year is moving quickly, and suddenly there are only four months left.

There is a natural temptation to accelerate. Now that I’m back, I should get serious. I should make a plan. I should get everything together. I should make these last four months count.

There is nothing wrong with wanting that. I like having plans. Returning to structure can feel good, and wanting to use the rest of the year well can be energizing. But I think there is a difference between rebuilding rhythm and demanding momentum. One helps us find our footing. The other assumes we’ve already found it.

And maybe there is something from summer worth bringing back with us: not the disrupted routines or the days without a schedule, but the feeling of loosening our grip a little.

We can make plans without holding on to them so tightly.

We can return to our routines without expecting every day to go exactly as planned. We can know where we want to go without needing to control every step of how we get there. Life will continue to happen around our plans, as it always does.

Sometimes I picture it as an open hand rather than a closed fist. We can still hold what matters to us—our intentions, our responsibilities, the things we want to build—but with enough space to adjust when life asks us to.

Because everyday stress will come back. We can’t organize our lives so perfectly that it disappears. What we can pay attention to is how tightly we respond to it.

And this is where the question we asked earlier becomes important again:

What state am I actually in?

If you’re tired, emotionally full, unsettled, or still adjusting, the answer may not be to push harder. If you’re feeling grounded and ready, then maybe it is time to make the plan.

Either way, knowing where you are gives you a much better place from which to decide where you want to go next.

Get Back Into Routine After Summer

September Does Not Need to Be January

I understand the appeal of a fresh start. September naturally carries some of that energy. We want to return to our work, take care of our bodies, make plans, get things done, and use the remaining months of the year well.

But September doesn’t have to become another January.

We don’t need to emerge from summer with a new version of ourselves, a perfect routine, and a four-month plan ready to go. We can find our rhythm again, notice how we feel, and decide what deserves our energy next.

And when we are ready to make plans, we can make them without gripping too tightly. There is room to move forward with intention while leaving space for life to happen along the way.

Maybe closing the year strong isn’t about how quickly we start September, or how much we manage to fit into the months ahead. Maybe it begins with knowing where we are, finding our footing, and moving from there.

Summer is over. September is here.

But have you arrived yet?
