CBD For Menopause

Several studies have reported the positive effects of CBD on the symptoms that are commonly associated with menopause, such as mood change, insomnia, pain, or skin condition. How is CBD beneficial for menopause?

What is Menopause ?

Menopause is a stage that typically occurs in the late 40s to early 50s in a woman’s life that indicates the end of reproductive years. In other words, menopause is when a woman ends the menstrual cycle that is no longer able to get pregnant naturally. Depending on the individual, it would either slows down gradually over a period or stops suddenly; The menopause process can cause a wide range of symptoms. The physical symptoms can be aches and insomnia. At the same time, the emotional symptoms may be anxiety and mood swings.

What is Cannabidiol?

Cannabidiol — also known as CBD — is a chemical compound from the cannabis plant. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for maintaining homeostasis in the body. It helps the human body to regulate situations like pain, anxiety, mood, and appetite. The calming effect on CBD can tone down stress levels, meanwhile still allows an individual to feel clear-headed and focused.

According to a literature review published in the Journal of Ovarian Research 2019, the ECS impacts female reproductive tissues and processes, playing a vital role in temperature regulation, sleep, pain, mood, memory, and immune function; Furthermore, evidence and animal model studies are beginning to suggest that combining a healthy lifestyle and cannabidiol (CBD) may have a significant synergy effect on menopause symptoms without the possible dangers of hormone replacement therapy.

Currently, there is little to no research for menopause particularly. However, various studies have tested the effects of CBD on specific symptoms in other study groups. The results indicate that CBD could provide relief for these symptoms regardless of their cause.

How to use CBD for menopause

1. Insomnia

Studies have revealed that insomnia affects more women than men. One in four women has insomnia symptoms from trouble falling and staying asleep to getting enough hours of sleep a night to feel rested. Furthermore, insomnia becomes more common with age, and older women are at a higher risk of insomnia. As women age into their late 40s to early 50s, the number increases drastically and worsens during menopause. In consequence, the issue has a significant impact on daily life.

The researchers from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, concluded that CBD dramatically improved REM sleep behavior disorder symptoms (RBD) associated with response to dreams and poor sleep. In line with RBD’s study, another research published in Springer Nature suggested that CBD increases daytime wakefulness and alertness. In other words, CBD helps the body to regulate the sleep-wake cycle, which could improve performance during the day and also improve nighttime sleep.

CBD product is different from the common sleeping pills, it interacts with ECS to maintain balance in the human body to put your body and mind in a more relaxing state. For example, melatonin can help you fall asleep faster, but it is not suitable to consume during the day due to drowsiness. CBD is a natural and effective alternative to enhance the sleep cycle and eliminate unpleasant side effects associated with over-the-counter and prescription sleep medications.

2. Mood Change

Due to hormonal changes, mood change is a common symptom during menopause. The risk of depression and anxiety can increase during this time.

Though the research on CBD is still in its infancy, growing evidence suggests CBD can treat anxiety. The study involved 72 patients, with 47 people having anxiety and 25 experiencing a difficult time sleeping. Each patient was given 25 milligrams (mg) of CBD in capsule form each day. Nearly 80% of the patients reported lower levels of anxiety, and 66.7% confirmed getting better sleep after taking CBD. Besides, a 2014 study suggests that CBD exhibited an anti-anxiety and antidepressant effect.

3. Chronic Pain

Aches and pain frequently occur in menopause, as reduced estrogen levels tend to produce higher inflammation levels. Women with menopause symptoms are nearly twice as likely to have chronic pain diagnoses.

The role of CBD in pain management is evolving. Evidence indicates when CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, where the pain reception is, the body will reduce the discomfort.

A 2016 study was conducted based on CBD for pain and inflammation in rats. Researchers concluded that CBD helps to reduce swelling and inflammation. It has potential therapeutic relief for arthritis pain and inflammation without any apparent side effects.

4. Skin Conditions

Due to hormone changes during menopause, women can experience a range of skin conditions as the body slows down collagen production. Most people lost fat under the skin, causing a decrease in elasticity. In addition to the dryness symptoms, it leads to wrinkles and fine lines.

When it comes to anti-aging ingredients, research has discovered long ago that applying antioxidants into a skincare routine is vital and essential. The sign of aging occurred when oxidative stress triggers inflammation. The inflammation process breaks down collagen and obstructs the natural repairing process. Hence, wrinkles or loose skin start to appear on the skin.

The powerful antioxidant trait in CBD has skin-firming effects that provide a reverse reaction to aging. It improves the texture and tone on the skin surface, which results in reducing the appearance of wrinkles and hyperpigmentation to a more youthful glow.

CBD for menopause isn’t a cure. There’s no sufficient scientific evidence proofing CBD is effective for easing menopausal symptoms entirely. But it does not stop the consumer from searching for it, as CBD may help manage and improve some of the symptoms and conditions of menopause.
