Stay Calm and Rise Above the Noise in Life

Stay Calm and Rise Above the Noise in Life

In today’s world, everyone seems to have an opinion. From the way you live your life, to how you raise your children, to the career you choose—someone always has something to say. It’s easy to get caught up in that noise and feel pulled in a thousand directions. But the truth is this: no matter what you do, you can never please everyone. The real strength lies in rising above the noise, staying calm, and holding steady to your true purpose.

There’s an old saying: A ship doesn’t sink because of the water around it—it sinks because water gets inside.

Life works the same way. The world will always throw waves at you—criticism, gossip, judgment, and negativity. But those waves can’t sink you unless you let them in. The storm outside doesn’t have to determine your peace inside.

The Horse, the Man & His Son

This truth was illustrated beautifully in a story I first heard during life coaching training.

A man and his son were once traveling together with their donkey. The father, frail from years of labor, sat on the donkey while his son walked beside him. Soon, a passerby scolded him:
“Lazy old man! How dare you make the boy walk under the sun while you ride comfortably?”

Embarrassed, the father got off and let his son ride. A little later, another voice shouted:
“What a foolish father! Do you want to collapse in the heat while your strong young son sits on the donkey?”

So the father climbed on as well. But in the next village, people yelled, “How cruel! Those two will kill that poor donkey!”

Feeling ashamed again, they both got off and walked. But then came more whispers: “These two must be stupid—walking beside a perfectly healthy donkey!”

At last, the father turned to his son and said, “There’s no wisdom, no conduct, no path that will satisfy everyone. If we try to live by others’ opinions, we’ll never reach our destination.”

This story has been told in various cultures, and it has even been captured in a Nigerian song called “Ketekete” by Ebenezer Obey. Its message is timeless: no matter how hard you try, you can’t live to please everyone.

Constructive Feedback vs. Noise

The lesson from this journey is clear: no matter what choice you make, someone will always have an opinion. But not every opinion carries the same weight. Some voices offer wisdom that can guide us forward, while others are simply noise that drains our energy. Learning to tell the difference between constructive feedback and empty criticism is essential if we want to stay true to our path.

1. Purpose vs. Projection

    • Constructive feedback is rooted in a desire to help you improve—it’s about the work, not your worth.

    • Noise is often projection: someone’s opinion, bias, or judgment spilling onto you without context or care.

2. Clarity vs. Confusion

    • Feedback usually comes with specifics: “This section could be clearer if you add an example.”

    • Noise is vague or sweeping: “This doesn’t make sense” or “I don’t like it,” with no useful detail.

3. Respect vs. Reaction

    • Feedback respects boundaries, tone, and timing. It’s shared when you’re open to it.

    • Noise often erupts without regard for timing—it can feel like an attack, not a dialogue.

4. Growth vs. Drain

    • Feedback leaves you with insight, even if it stings.

    • Noise leaves you depleted, questioning your direction without any clear next step.

The key question to ask yourself:

Does this input give me something I can act on to improve? Or does it only distract me from my path?

If it’s constructive, lean in and learn. If it’s noise, let it pass like wind around the ship—you don’t need to let it inside.

Protect Your Energy & Rise Above the Noise

Every time you react to outside noise, you spend energy that could have been used for growth, creativity, or simply living fully. Like a boat in the storm, you only sink if you let the water in. Protect your inner calm. Set boundaries for your time, your emotions, and your focus.

When negativity pecks at you, remind yourself: their opinion is just wind—it passes. Your purpose is the anchor that keeps you steady.

‣ Clarify Your Purpose

Know what matters most to you. When your “why” is clear, outside opinions lose their grip.

‣ Pause Before Reacting

Not every comment deserves your energy. Sometimes the most powerful response is silence.

‣ Stay Centered Daily

Practices like journaling, meditation, or morning reflection help strengthen your inner calm.

‣ Choose Whose Voice Matters

Feedback from a trusted mentor or loved one can be valuable. But the random noise from strangers? That’s just clutter.

‣ Keep Moving Forward

Just like the donkey story shows, if you stop to answer every critic, you’ll never reach your destination. Stay on your path.

Finding Peace in Your Own Direction

“When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. That’s my religion.” – Abraham Lincoln

That simple wisdom is powerful. Instead of asking, “What will people say?” ask, “Does this align with my values? Does it feel right in my heart?”

When you live from that place, the noise fades into the background. You become like the steady boat that stays afloat—not because the storm stops, but because you refuse to let it in.

The storms of life are inevitable. Criticism, doubts, and opinions will always come. But you don’t have to let them sink you. Be like the ship that keeps the water out. Be like the father who realized he could never satisfy every voice around him.

Stay calm. Protect your energy. Keep moving toward your purpose.

Because the world will always talk, but only you can choose the direction of your journey.
