What is Energy Management?

Many of us are familiar with the concept of time management—carefully scheduling our daily tasks within the confines of the 24-hour day. We diligently plot our activities on calendars and to-do lists, striving for organization and efficiency. However, amidst our focus on time, we often overlook the critical relationship between time and energy.

Time vs Energy:

Time is an external construct—an unyielding construct that marches forward regardless of our actions. Each day brings us a fixed allocation of 24 hours, and once these hours have passed, they are gone forever. Yesterday becomes an irretrievable relic, lost to the relentless progression of time.

Energy, on the other hand, is an internal resource that we wield and manage. Unlike time, it is not bound by external constraints but exists within us, subject to our control and influence. While energy is not limitless and requires renewal, we possess the ability to monitor and replenish our energy levels through intentional practices such as rest, nutrition, and mindful engagement.

Consider these real-life scenarios: staying up late into the early hours to cram for an exam, only to wake up the next morning with a foggy mind and fragmented memories of the material studied. Despite the hours invested, the lack of adequate rest and exhausted energy reserves hindered retention and comprehension.

Similarly, imagine attempting to read a book in a bustling environment, with background music playing, the TV on, and your phone buzzing incessantly. In this distracted state, you find yourself re-reading paragraphs multiple times, struggling to grasp the content due to scattered attention. Although time was allocated to reading, the energy needed for deep focus and comprehension was dispersed among competing stimuli, resulting in inefficient learning and a sense of frustration.

These scenarios illustrate the concept of investing time without effectively utilizing energy—a situation akin to a dog incessantly chasing its own tail, expending effort without making meaningful progress.

Multitasking vs. Single Tasking

Effective energy management involves understanding our energy levels within specific tasks over time and strategically prioritizing tasks to maximize outcomes, focusing on achieving quality results with the available time and energy resources. In other words, “quality vs. time and energy” instead of “quantity vs. time”

Consider a person attempting to move a massive rock all at once, expending all their energy in a single effort, trying to do everything simultaneously. Now, contrast this with a strategic approach: understanding one’s energy levels, breaking down the task into manageable parts, and gradually moving the rock efficiently and effectively by focusing on one important task at a time. This latter approach offers a much better chance of successfully moving the entire rock to the other side without experiencing burnout.

 (minimum) time × (maximum) energy × task priority = outcome.

Adding more time without increasing your energy input can lead to two significant outcomes:

1. You may not achieve the desired outcome despite investing more time in a particular area.

2. By allocating excessive time to one area, you inevitably sacrifice time that could be invested in other important areas of your life or work, thereby limiting your overall opportunities for growth and development.

Why is energy management important?

Think of human energy like the battery energy in your mobile phone. Just as your phone needs recharging and may go into low battery mode below a certain percentage (let’s say around 20%), where its functionality is reduced until recharged, humans too experience decreased efficiency and effectiveness without replenishing their energy.

When we neglect to replenish our energy, we become less efficient and effective. We become irritable, anxious, and under more pressure. Stress hormones rise and persist, while executive function in the prefrontal cortex—responsible for memory, judgment, and impulse control—declines. Brain areas associated with anger and anxiety become activated. Do you recognize these symptoms?

This decline in energy affects our careers and work. Expectations increase from teachers or bosses, concerns arise among peers, and teamwork suffers. As focus wanes, people around us start losing confidence, and over time, feelings of failure spill over into other areas of life.

In our personal lives, our families and friends feel the impact of our depleted energy. They may sense our lack of focus, increasing guilt, and growing distress. Yet, we often live in a perpetual cycle of doing and achieving, believing we can add more tasks to our already overloaded schedules. However, when our energy drops, everything else follows suit. It can transform us into different individuals—we may act out of character with loved ones, exhibit unusual behavior, and dismiss anything we perceive as unproductive.
